Amazon Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery, Closes Amazon Fresh Stores, and Plans 100+ New Whole Foods Locations

Amazon is reshaping the future of grocery shopping in the United States with faster delivery services, a massive expansion of Whole Foods Market, and the closure of its Amazon-branded physical grocery stores.

Amazon Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery Nationwide

Amazon currently offers fast and convenient grocery delivery in more than 5,000 cities and towns across the U.S., including thousands served by Same-Day Delivery. Customers can shop fresh groceries such as produce, meat, dairy, baked goods, and frozen foods alongside millions of everyday essentials.

Due to strong customer demand, Amazon plans to expand Same-Day Delivery of fresh groceries to many more communities in 2026, backed by the company’s Freshness Guarantee.

Perishable Grocery Sales Surge in 2025

Amazon reported that perishable grocery sales through Same-Day Delivery have grown more than 40x since January 2025. In areas where the service is available, fresh groceries now dominate customer orders, accounting for nine of the top ten most-purchased items.

Amazon Now: 30-Minute Grocery Delivery Test

Amazon is also testing Amazon Now, an ultra-fast delivery service that brings thousands of essential items—including fresh food—to customers’ doors in about 30 minutes or less. The service is currently available in select U.S. cities.

Amazon Becomes One of America’s Largest Grocers

With more than $150 billion in annual gross grocery sales, Amazon is now one of the top three grocery retailers in the United States. Over 150 million customers shop for groceries on Amazon each year, with household essentials making up one-third of all units sold.

Whole Foods Market to Open 100+ New Stores

Amazon is significantly increasing its investment in Whole Foods Market. Since its acquisition in 2017, Whole Foods has achieved over 40% sales growth and expanded to more than 550 locations.

Over the next few years, Amazon plans to open more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores across the U.S.

Whole Foods Market Daily Shop Expansion

Amazon is also expanding its smaller store format, Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, which focuses on grab-and-go meals, coffee, and everyday essentials. Five additional Daily Shop locations are planned by the end of 2026.

Amazon to Close Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh Physical Stores

As part of a strategic realignment, Amazon will close Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores, converting select locations into Whole Foods Market stores. Customers can continue to shop Amazon Fresh online in supported areas.

Just Walk Out Technology Continues to Grow

Amazon’s Just Walk Out checkout-free technology will continue expanding globally. The system is now active in over 360 third-party locations across five countries and is being rolled out in Amazon fulfillment centers.

New Physical Retail Concepts Coming

Amazon plans to continue testing new physical retail concepts, including supercenter-style stores that combine fresh groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise—aimed at delivering maximum convenience and value.

Amazon’s Vision for Grocery Shopping

Amazon’s long-term goal remains focused on making grocery shopping faster, easier, and more affordable by combining innovation, speed, and customer-focused investments.
