U.S. Launches Massive Airstrikes on ISIS Targets in Syria After Deadly Attack on American Troops

The United States has launched a large-scale military offensive against ISIS targets across Syria following a deadly ambush that killed two American soldiers and a U.S. interpreter, according to multiple sources cited by CBS News.

U.S. officials confirmed that the retaliatory campaign involved dozens of air and ground strikes across central Syria, using a combination of fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery. More than 70 ISIS-linked targets were hit during the operation, with officials later confirming that over 100 precision-guided munitions were deployed.

Fighter Jets, Helicopters, and Artillery Used in Coordinated Assault

The strikes were carried out using F-15 and F-16 fighter jets, A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” aircraft, and Apache attack helicopters, U.S. defense officials said. Fighter jets from Jordan also participated, highlighting regional coordination in the operation.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) described the assault as a “massive retaliatory strike”, stating that it targeted known ISIS infrastructure, weapons depots, and operational hubs.

Operation Hawkeye Strike Targets ISIS Leadership and Infrastructure

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the launch of “Operation Hawkeye Strike”, stating that the mission was designed to eliminate ISIS fighters and dismantle the group’s operational capabilities in direct response to the attack on U.S. forces.

“Today, we hunted and we killed our enemies,” Hegseth wrote on X. “And we will continue.”

CENTCOM later revealed that since the attack, U.S. forces have conducted 10 counterterrorism operations in Syria and Iraq, resulting in the death or detention of 23 ISIS operatives.

Deadly Ambush Killed U.S. Soldiers and Interpreter in Palmyra

The retaliation follows an ISIS ambush in Palmyra, Syria, where a lone gunman attacked a U.S. military unit. The assault killed Sgt. William Howard and Sgt. Edgar Torres Tovar, both members of the Iowa National Guard, along with U.S. interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat. Three additional Guard members were wounded.

According to the Pentagon, the unit was supporting a key regional leader at the time of the attack.

Trump and Pentagon Vow “Overwhelming Force”

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth attended the dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base earlier this week. Following the attack, Trump pledged “very serious retaliation” in a Truth Social post.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly later stated, “President Trump told the world the United States would retaliate for the killing of our heroes by ISIS in Syria — and he is delivering on that promise.”

U.S. Signals Ongoing Military Action Against ISIS

U.S. military officials emphasized that the operation marks a continued effort to prevent ISIS from regrouping or launching further attacks on American personnel in the region. CENTCOM warned that additional strikes could follow if threats persist.
