Parents Hail Son as ‘Hero’ After He Wrestles Gun from Bondi Beach Shooter

The parents of a fruit shop owner who confronted and disarmed one of the Bondi Beach attackers have praised their son as a hero. Dramatic footage captures 43-year-old Ahmed Al Ahmed rushing at one of the gunmen from behind and wrestling a long-barrelled firearm from him.

The footage, broadcast by media outlets worldwide, has been viewed over 22 million times on social media. It shows a second civilian rushing toward the now-unarmed shooter and hurling an object at him, while both remain crouched behind a tree as the gunman begins to walk away.

Mr Ahmed’s parents told the ABC that he had been shot four to five times in the shoulder, with several bullets still lodged in his body. Mohamed Fateh Al Ahmed and Malakeh Hasan Al Ahmed said they had arrived in Sydney from Syria just a few months ago and had been separated from their son since he moved to Australia in 2006.

‘He saw people were dying,’ Ms Ahmed said, adding that she kept ‘beating myself up and crying’ after receiving the call that her son had been shot in what was described as an ‘accident.’

“He saw people dying and losing their lives, and when the shooter ran out of ammo, he wrestled the gun from him—but he was hit,” she said. “We pray that God protects him.”
