Ja Morant Returns to FedExForum, Criticizes Grizzlies’ “Soft” Defense in Loss to Jazz
Ja Morant received a thunderous ovation in his first pregame introduction at FedExForum since Nov. 9, but his long-awaited return ended in disappointment as the Memphis Grizzlies fell 130–126 to the Utah Jazz.
After missing 10 games with a right calf strain, Morant returned to action on Dec. 12 and immediately boosted Memphis’ offensive rhythm. However, with 7-foot-3 center Zach Edey sidelined, the Grizzlies struggled defensively and were unable to protect the glass against Utah.
Grizzlies Defense Falters Despite Morant’s Return
Memphis looked sharper offensively with Morant on the floor, but defensive breakdowns proved costly. The Grizzlies were outrebounded 58–49, allowing Utah to dominate second-chance opportunities with a 24–14 edge in points off offensive rebounds.
Morant did not mince words after the game.
“We should’ve won,” Morant said. “We played soft. They beat us on the boards, their bench made a difference, and their star players were comfortable. We have to be better—and I have to be better.”
The loss dropped Memphis to 11–14 and marked the first defeat this season against a team below .500, as Utah improved to 9–15.
Utah Jazz Surge Turns the Game
Memphis built a lead of up to 12 points before the Jazz flipped the momentum with a decisive 29–7 run midway through the third quarter. Utah guard Keyonte George delivered a career-best performance, scoring 39 points to lead all scorers. Lauri Markkanen added 26 points, while Kevin Love provided a major spark off the bench with 20 points and four three-pointers.
Morant Shines Individually in Limited Minutes
Despite the loss, Morant showed flashes of his All-Star form. Playing under a minutes restriction, he logged just 25 minutes but finished with 21 points and 10 assists, orchestrating the offense with confidence.
When asked about reintegrating himself into a team that had found some rhythm in his absence, Morant initially paused before responding.
“Just trying to find my spots within that,” Morant said. “When we move the ball, we usually get good shots. I’m just finding my niche within the offense.”
Teammates Welcome Morant Back
Morant’s presence was felt beyond the stat sheet, according to his teammates. Jaren Jackson Jr. emphasized the impact of having the franchise point guard back on the floor.
“When he’s not out there, it’s not ideal,” Jackson said. “It’s not a vibe. When he’s on the court, it’s great.”
Jackson Jr. and Defensive Adjustments Remain a Concern
Jackson Jr. finished with 12 points on 6-for-13 shooting, a modest output for a player the Grizzlies expect to be more aggressive. Head coach Tuomas Iisalo has stressed the need for Jackson to assert himself more consistently, though Jackson believes missed shots—not system changes—are the issue.
“I’m just missing,” Jackson said. “They’re the same shots. You’ve got to get to your spots and make it happen.”
Defensive adjustments also led to breakdowns, particularly in rotations. Reserve center Jock Landale noted that changes in coverage allowed Kevin Love to find space on the weak side.
Cam Spencer Stays Hot From Deep
One bright spot for Memphis was Cam Spencer, who delivered a flawless shooting night from beyond the arc. Spencer knocked down all six of his three-point attempts, scoring 20 points while serving as Morant’s backup at point guard.
Still, Spencer remained focused on the team’s defensive struggles rather than his own performance.
“I was locked in on defense,” Spencer said. “We didn’t get enough stops, and that’s what matters most.”
Looking Ahead
While Ja Morant’s return energized FedExForum and improved the Grizzlies’ offense, Memphis’ defensive lapses and rebounding issues remain glaring concerns. If the Grizzlies hope to climb the Western Conference standings, tightening up on the defensive end will be just as important as having their star point guard back in the lineup.
