Dangerous Winter Snowstorm Set to Impact NYC, New Jersey, and Upstate New York With Heavy Snowfall

A powerful winter storm is creating dangerous post-Christmas travel conditions across the Northeast, with New York City expected to see its heaviest snowfall in years. Weather officials warn that the fast-moving system will bring a dangerous mix of snow, ice, and freezing rain, significantly disrupting travel by road and air.

The storm has already caused widespread flight disruptions, with more than 1,000 flights canceled nationwide on Friday. Major delays and cancellations are affecting all three New York City airports, along with Detroit Metropolitan Airport, as airlines struggle with worsening weather conditions.

Earlier in the week, the storm moved through the Midwest, leaving icy roads across Wisconsin and Michigan. Drivers in those states are being urged to slow down and use extreme caution due to slick and frozen surfaces.

By Friday morning, freezing rain is spreading into Pennsylvania, where treacherous road conditions are expected statewide. An ice storm warning has been issued for parts of western Pennsylvania, impacting nearly one million residents.

Colder air on the northern side of the system is allowing heavy snow to fall across large parts of the Northeast, including New York, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, western Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Snow is forecast to begin in western New York Friday morning, reaching New York City by late afternoon.

Forecasters say snowfall rates could be intense at times, leading to poor visibility and extremely hazardous travel conditions. Snow will continue through the night before tapering off in New York City by Saturday morning.

New York City is expected to receive around 7 inches of snow, marking its most significant snowfall in nearly four years. A winter storm warning remains in effect across the tri-state area, with 6 to 9 inches of snow forecast in upstate New York and up to 10 inches possible in the Hudson Valley. Northern New Jersey could see 5 to 8 inches, while Hartford, Connecticut, may receive around 4 inches.

Further south, Philadelphia is expected to see a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and a light ice glaze that could make roads hazardous Friday night. Baltimore is also bracing for icy travel conditions as the storm continues east.
