Sixers Focus on Consistency as Finals Push Looms in BBL|15
After four straight seasons of falling short in the finals, the Sydney Sixers head into KFC BBL|15 determined to peak when it matters most.
Chasing a record eighth consecutive finals appearance, Greg Shipperd’s side will again rely on a strong core of domestic players, complemented by high-profile overseas reinforcements. Veteran allrounder Moises Henriques returns as captain, while long-time Sixers stalwart James Vince will not feature this season after scoring more than 2,000 runs across seven campaigns with the club.
Replacing Vince is Pakistan superstar Babar Azam, who is set to make his Big Bash debut in Sunday night’s season opener against the Perth Scorchers. England World Cup–winning allrounder Sam Curran — player of the match in the 2022 final — will also join the squad midway through the tournament. Importantly for the Sixers, Curran, Babar, and English leg-spinner Jafer Chohan will all be available for the finals should the team qualify.
The Sixers’ frustration in recent years has stemmed from strong regular-season performances that have failed to translate into finals success.
“It’s been four years now where we’ve finished first or second and then had disappointing finals performances,” Henriques said.
“Getting there is the first challenge, but once you do, you want a team that’s sustainable and ready for that moment.”
Henriques highlighted the importance of international availability late in the season, something the club has lacked in recent campaigns.
“In recent years we’ve lost key players like James Vince and Steve Smith before the finals. This season, our internationals are available for the second half and beyond, which is a big change for us.”
Finishing inside the top four has been a hallmark of the Sixers’ success, achieved in 11 of the tournament’s 14 editions. That consistency has been driven by list stability, a philosophy that continues in BBL|15, with young batter Lachlan Shaw and experienced fast bowler Kane Richardson the only domestic additions.
Henriques praised the club’s culture and long-term approach to squad building.
“We don’t just pick players for one or two seasons. We want people to feel connected, like they’re part of a family,” he said.
“The longer you’re part of the group, the stronger that connection becomes — and we’ve been lucky that a lot of our players have delivered year after year.”
Players such as Jordan Silk and the returning Dan Hughes were singled out for the value they bring beyond the stat sheet, reinforcing the depth and continuity that has defined the Sixers’ era.
